How did you get where you are today? I started out at United Biscuits in the sales and marketing arena, which gave me a real insight into how big companies build brands. I then moved to The Snack Factory and in 1999 I joined SHS Sales & Marketing as sales director. I was appointed managing director at the start of this year. What is the best decision you have made in your career and why? Joining SHS Sales & Marketing. At the time, the move into brokerage was not an obvious choice. However, I joined a leading company and the changes we've implemented have had a real impact on the way brand owners view us - and the industry - today. If you could change one thing in the grocery industry what would it be? I'd make sure that people across the industry give more time to each other. Communication is vital in ensuring opportunities are realised so that brands have the best chance to represent themselves. What is the one thing that you could not do your job without? The team of people around me. It's their passion and commitment to our brands that lies at the heart of our business. If you could start your career again, what would you do differently? I'm a great believer in not looking back, as you can't change the past. There is so much to be excited about in the future. What advice would you give to someone starting out? Show respect for what's gone before but don't be afraid to put forward suggestions on how things can develop. It's really important to believe in yourself. What do you like doing when you are not working? I love spending time with my wife Fiona and four children, Ben, Sophie, Will and George. As a family we enjoy horse-riding and holidaying on the Cornish coast. I'm also a keen sportsman and I love playing and following cricket and rugby union. Where do you hope to be in five years time? I have a clear strategy on where I want the business to be five years from now. Technology and data insight will play a greater role in business growth, boosting efficiency in sales, reporting and logistics. Continual staff development is central to this.
