The Co-op has launched a Women in Leadership programme focused on the logistics sector to support its female talent in what has often been seen as a male-dominated industry.
The initiative provided a launchpad for women wanting to join or progress in logistics leadership and management, the convenience supermarket said.
“Logistics has not always been seen as an industry where women can be successful,” said Claire Costello, chief people & inclusion officer at the Co-op.
“It is critical that we have the best people in roles where they feel fulfilled, engaged and therefore deliver for our colleagues, members and customers.
“We are focused on removing barriers and supporting development, and proud to invest in our Women in Leadership programme to encourage an inclusive environment where all colleagues can be their best selves.”

Logistics has traditionally been a male-dominated sector – but as it moves towards automation, companies are scrambling to diversify and retain talent, whether that be in warehouses or lorry driving.
“I’m really looking forward to connecting with others from across our logistics network, gaining insight from mentorship and allyship on how to be a successful leader, and gaining the skills and behaviours to better develop myself and others, which is my own personal passion”, said Juliet Mulholland, a customer service manager at Co-op’s Biggleswade depot, who is part of the first cohort.
“It’s exciting to be part of a new concept, and this called out to me as a woman with career aspirations, working in a predominantly male-centric industry,” she added.
