A co-operative society is taking steps to eradicate antisocial behaviour with the introduction of an anti-crime partnership project in Yapton, West Sussex.
By joining forces with Sussex Police and Yapton Parish Council, Southern Co-operatives has helped to forge the Yapton Advice Partnership and has converted office space above its store in the village to provide a drop-in centre for local residents. The opening follows the sucess of a similar "cop shop" initiative set up in Eltham in south east London last April.
Visitors to the centre, which will be manned by parish councillors, police and representatives from the Citizen's Advice Bureaux, can obtain advice and information, as well as report their worries.
Speaking at the opening, Gareth Lewis, Southern Co-operatives' loss prevention and compliance manager, said: "Yapton has been suffering from an increase in antisocial behaviour over the past two years, particularly since the closure of the local police station. There was a real need for a contact point."
