Co-op is trialling a new sleep initiative with more than 1,000 night shift workers at its eight UK depots, following a pilot run last year. Night Club is the result of a partnership between the Co-op and health charity Wellcome. It aims to bring shift workers from depots, retail operations and Funeralcare night ambulance crews together with professional sleep experts to promote a greater understanding of the link between sleep and mental wellbeing.
Delivered by public engagement consultancy The Liminal Space, Night Club is visiting eight Co-op depots over the coming weeks.
The initiative includes one-on-one consultations with sleep experts and trials to show how eating at different times of day can affect sleep.
Co-op CEO Steve Murrells visited night shift workers at the retailer’s Coventry depot last week to test out the sleep programme.
“Our night shift colleagues play a vital role in ensuring our Co-op customers and members can buy what they want, when they want it,” he said.
“Their health and wellbeing are hugely important to us. We’re pleased to be able to bring the Night Club initiative to our depot colleagues so that together we can improve their experience of work and their wellbeing.”
Chris Perry, Co-op Food director of people, said: “We’re delighted at how many colleagues are engaging with Night Club as it continues its journey around the UK. Improved sleep means happier, more productive colleagues who are empowered to take greater control of their own wellbeing.
“Information captured during the initial stage of the Night Club programme will be incredibly useful in helping us work alongside our teams to review or amend our nightshift practices where necessary.”
