The Co-op has opened its largest distribution depot yet in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire following a £45m investment.
Deliveries are now underway to stores across the south east. The site is set to serve more than 600 Co-op sites when it becomes fully operational later this year.
Previously, products were delivered into the region from its Wellingborough and Andover depots. The new, larger distribution centre means the retailer can handle frozen, fresh and ambient groceries from one depot to all stores across the south east.
“Our new Biggleswade depot represents a significant investment in our logistic operations, bringing thousands of products closer to communities across the south east,” said Co-op supply chain and logistics director Andy Perry.
“Serving our members and customers however and wherever they choose to shop with us is at the very heart of what we do. Whether shoppers choose to pop into their local Co-op, or shop online – where groceries are picked fresh in the local store – our depots work to serve and support our communities and operations.
“Our investment in our new Biggleswade depot forms part of plans to ensure we have the right distribution facilities in place to serve our communities, both now and in the future.”
The depot is expected to use 100% renewable energy and include solar panels on the roof. It also features indoor and outdoor spaces that focus on the wellbeing of the up to 1,000 colleagues working at the site, the convenience retailer explained.
This includes an outside green space as well as its own initiative Night Club, which aims to support and promote better sleep, diet and mental health.
