The Co-operative Group has reported massive energy savings after installing chiller doors across its estate.
The society revealed last February that it would fit chiller doors in all 2,000 convenience stores. In September, it confirmed chiller doors would also be fitted in its larger supermarkets, taking the total number of stores to 2,800.
The Co-op Group has now revealed that using a combination of chiller doors and energy efficient Nualight LED lighting, it is achieving 60% to 70% energy savings on total store running costs.
The Co-op has been telling customers about the move by putting stickers on the new chiller doors with messages such as ‘it’s an open and shut case - help make your shop warmer’ and ‘I wouldn’t leave my fridge door open - help keep your food fresh’.
Shoppers were also spending longer in stores because they were warmer, the Co-op Group added.
