The Co-operative has switched supply of its Truly Irresistible pork range to meat from Hampshire-breed pigs raised on higher-welfare farms.
All fresh pork, bacon and sausages in the retailer's premium own-brand range is now sourced from Freedom Food-accredited farms. "As well as providing a better quality of life for pigs, the outdoor-reared Hampshire-breed pork is delicious," said Lynne Forbes, category development manager for chilled, prepared and protein.
The retailer also plans to source all its own-brand fresh pork from higher-welfare herds by autumn.
Elsewhere, Waitrose reported a sharp increase in free-range British pork sales over the festive period. Gammon joints rose 120% by volume year-on-year, with pigs in blankets up 125%. "Consumers are putting their money where their mouth is and choosing British pork," said Waitrose MD Mark Price.
