The Co-op is to spend more than £28m on its store investment programme in London in a move it said would create 1,600 jobs.
As part of plans for more than 100 new stores across the UK, announced last month, the retailer said it would open a record number of new stores in the capital this year, including 30 new food stores.
It is also set to revamp a further seven in London in 2018.
The first phase of the new stores will be in Walthamstow, Colliers Wood Station, Cricklewood, Colindale Station and Paddington.
It will take the number of Co-op stores in London up to 152 by the end of the year.
The Co-op has set out rapid plans for expansion at the core of its turnaround strategy and, along with the discounters, has been the food retailer most aggressive in the property markets.
“It’s an incredibly exciting time for the Co-op in London as we gear up to launch and refit a record number of stores across the capital,” said Co-op divisional managing director Peter Batt.
“As well as being hubs for the local community, our stores are committed to providing a consistently brilliant in-store experience, allowing customers living in busy urban areas to get what they want, when they want.
“Our new store launches and refits, together with our ever-growing range of locally sourced produce and increasing member numbers, put us in a strong position as we look towards further expansion in 2019 and beyond.”
