The Co-operative Group is launching a host of new products and promotions to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight, which starts on 23 February.
The society is adding two new wines to its Fairtrade offering - a Chilean Fairtrade Rosé and an Argentinian Fairtrade Sauvignon Blanc three-litre wine box - and slashing the price of Fairtrade branded and own-label products, including all Fairtrade wine, by as much as 20% from Monday.
Stores will also offer a series of Fairtrade information booklets listing Fairtrade campaign groups across the UK, as well as a series of DVDs highlighting the benefits of Fairtrade to coffee, sugar, wine and tea growers.
Fairtrade sales rose 44% in Co-op Group stores in 2008, said Brad Hill, Fairtrade strategic development manager for the Co-op Group. "Our sales figures show how important Fairtrade is to our customers and, thanks to their continued support, we can ensure a better deal for growers in developing countries."
Meanwhile, the Co-op Group this week turned its 24-storey Manchester HQ into what it claimed was the tallest canvas in the UK. On the side of the building, it projected an image of a dandelion ahead of the release of its new TV advert on Monday.
The ad features images filmed from a helicopter showing areas in which the society is commercially or socially active, such as Fairtrade, with the strapline 'Good for Everyone'.
