CWS has decided to close three unprofitable superstores in Leigh, Burnley and Leytonstone in the new year after failing to find suitable buyers.
Although the cooperative society will try to redeploy employees, 51 full-time and 155 part-time staff will lose their jobs. The society announced plans to sell its underperforming superstores in the summer to free up cash to invest in the more profitable smaller store formats Welcome and Market Town.
One option being explored for the Burnley store is to subdivide the 43,000 sq ft building into retail units.
