German cocoa-free chocolate brand ChoViva has made its UK grocery debut through a seasonal tie-up with Aldi.

It has launched Peanut Butter Mini Eggs (rsp: £1.49/90g) into stores, under the discounter’s private label Dairyfine, ahead of Easter.

The treats are made predominantly from ChoViva – which contains sugar, vegetable fat, skimmed milk powder, sunflower seed flour, grapeseed flour and emulsifiers – with a creamy filling made from peanut flour, chopped peanuts and cocoa butter.

They were made in partnership with German chocolate manufacturer WAWI-Schokolade AG.

ChoViva is the brainchild of Munich-based foodtech startup Planet A Foods, which was founded by twins Maximilian and Sara Marquart in 2021.

“We didn’t want to produce something, manufacture something that is only for the elite or the have a high purchasing power,” Sara Marquart told The Grocer.

“So, our prices are comparable or lower than conventional cocoa and chocolate. And I think what’s very important is that we have no volatility in prices. The ingredients that we use (primarily sunflower seeds) are highly abundant.”

While Dairyfine Peanut Butter Mini Eggs are ChoViva’s first UK launch, the business previously partnered with Lindt to launch a limited-edition vegan chocolate bar in Germany for Veganuary 2024.

The business last year secured over $45m to boost its production capacities and fund its international expansion.

It comes as stocks of cocoa in London and New York have plunged to all-time lows, following poor harvests in west Africa, caused by drought.

Cadbury owner Mondelez last week warned its earnings will likely fall this year due to “unprecedented cocoa cost inflation”.
