Spanish wine company Grupo Codorníu is launching a new brand in the UK to capitalise on strong growth in Spanish wine.
The Spanish Quarter wines, one white one red, were made from a mix of traditional Spanish grapes blended with international varietals to make them more familiar to UK consumers, the company said.
The Chardonnay-Albariño and Cabernet Sauvignon-Tempranillo are priced at £7.99 per bottle. The range would appeal to both experienced and novice wine consumers, said Carolyn D'Aquilar, UK brand manager for The Spanish Quarter.
"The dual varietal red and white wines successfully balance old world-tradition with an understanding of contemporary tastes and trends and are designed to appeal to experienced consumers as well as to consumers new to the sector," she said.
The company, better known as a producer of Spanish sparkling Cava, is hoping distinctive packaging with brightly painted iconic Spanish cultural images will entice consumers to pick up and try the wine.
Last year, UK sales of Spanish wines priced £5 plus were up 20.6% in value [Nielsen]. "The UK is one of the biggest importers of Spanish wine and The Spanish Quarter is set to capitalise on this," said D'Aquilar.
The new brand marks the second piece of sizeable activity from the company in the past couple of months. Last month, it launched Leiras to cash in on the trend for Spanish grape Albariño. Company figures put Albariño sales up 62% by value and 54% by volume between 2006 and 2007 in the UK.
