Supermarket coin exchange service Coinstar has linked up with leading UK charities to give shoppers an option of donating loose change.
A Coins that Count' service now allows customers at Asda, Sainsbury and Tesco to pay in money to causes including the British Heart Foundation, The Cancer Research Campaign, and UNICEF.
The Coinstar technology is being upgraded to allow customers to donate to urgent disaster relief campaigns and charity appeals in future.
Sam Dixon, marketing manager for concessions at Sainsbury, said: "We are introducing the Coins that Count initiative at our 70 stores with the Coinstar machines as part of our determination to identify, develop and deliver an enhanced shopping experience."
Coinstar md Alex Camera said: "Over 300 million coins have been cashed in since the launch of the first machine in the UK six months ago. Research shows up to 70% of money changed is spent in store."
