Speculation is rife that drinks giant Coca-Cola could be planning to snap up mineral water brand Highland Spring.
Persistent rumours suggest that Coca-Cola is eyeing the brand as a vehicle for a possible return to UK water following its Dasani ‘tap water’ débâcle in 2004.
The company has been investing heavily in its existing water operations. In July last year The Grocer revealed that Coca-Cola had increased its production facilities for its Bonaqua mineral water brand in Spain. And in 2004 it was revealed that Coca-Cola was working to find a mineral or spring water reserve to provide a new UK brand.
Buyers for the major multiples told The Grocer that they were aware of the rumours.
However, Highland Spring dismissed the claims. A spokeswoman said: “Highland Spring is linked to rumours like this all the time. It is just speculation.” A spokesman for Coca-Cola said: “People are always trying to put two and two together in terms of Coca-Cola and water brands.”
