Foodservice provider Compass has committed to ethically sourcing its fish supplies by signing up to the Sustainable Seafood Coalition (SSC).
Compass, the largest foodservice group in the UK, has joined the likes of Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Birds Eye in signing up to the voluntary code of conduct.
In doing so, Compass will ensure it only sells seafood that is sustainably sourced and labelled with accurate information to its 15,000 locations across the UK and Ireland.
The SSC aims to prevent overfishing in and around the British Isles by promoting responsible sourcing practices. It says a number of fish stocks are “at risk” around the UK such as sea bass and, until recently, North Sea cod.
SSC co-ordinator Katie Miller said: “Having Compass Group UK & Ireland join the SSC is fantastic as more people across the UK will be eating responsibly sourced fish. Compass is leading the way for other major foodservice businesses to step up their public commitments to seafood sustainability.”
