The Compleat Food Group has made redundancies at its Crewe factory, following its announcement in January that up to 131 jobs at its Nottingham site were at risk.
The business confirmed it had reduced its Crewe workforce after a source close to the matter told Just Food that 61 positions had been axed at the pie-making factory in north west England, and that agency workers had been brought in as replacements.
When approached by Just Food, the company would not confirm the number of job losses, but stressed it was fewer than 61 and “no agency workers are working in the impacted bakery”.
“Following a comprehensive review of the volume at our Crewe site, some redundancies have been made,” said a spokesperson for Compleat Food Group.
“The majority were voluntary redundancies,” they added.
“The review was required due to changing demand in a competitive trading environment and to ensure we can continue to support the long-term sustainable future of the site.
“We worked closely with all employees affected, including meeting on an individual basis to offer positions at other sites along with practical support.”
The business declined to comment further when approached by The Grocer.
The Compleat Food Group was formed in 2021 when private equity owner PAI Partners merged its UK portfolio companies Winterbotham Darby and Addo Food Group.
It took over the Crewe factory later that year, when it acquired family-owned pie maker Wrights Food Group in its first deal.
The redundancies at Crewe follow the business’ announcement in January that it had drawn up plans to reduce the number of jobs at Tottle Bakery.
The Compleat Food Group said it had entered into discussions over possible redundancies and that up to 131 roles were at risk at the Nottingham site, which manufactures branded and private-label products.
A spokesperson said the move was the result of a “comprehensive review of cold pie volume” at the site.
