French food group Danone said sales for the first nine months of the year fell 4.9% hit by unfavourable exchange rates and consolidation but “in line with internal objectives”.
The maker Evian and Volvic water as well as Jacob’s biscuits and HP sauce a posted 7.8% rise in third quarter like-for-like sales and 5.3% over nine months.
But turnover fell to 10.47bn euros from 11.01bn euros in 2001, due to a negative impact of 5.2% from exchange rates and 5% from changes to the scope of consolidation.
The group confirmed its full-year targets for 2002 with a rise in like-for-like sales growth of 5.2%.
Danone bought the Shape yogurt brands and St Ivel spreads business from UK dairy firm Uniq for £32m. It has also added two water cooler businesses in Canada and Europe and linked up with Coca-Cola in the US to distribute Evian Stateside.
The group concluded that the sale of Kronenbourg to Scottish & Newcastle for £1.4bn would reduce its debt by 35%.
