This is not surprising since health is a key driver for salmon and this older age group is particularly concerned with healthy eating and traditional meals rather than convenience formats.
Salmon is 52% more likely to be eaten for health reasons than other fish.
Encouragingly, consumption is increasing most among 17 to 24-year-olds. Males aged 17-24 have increased their consumption by 91% and females of the same age by 54%. These age groups may be becoming more aware of the health benefits of fish and the simplicity of cooking salmon. Smoked salmon could also be contributing with its popularity in sandwiches and bagels.
The evening meal is key for salmon consumption, with two-thirds consumed at this occasion. Salmon tends to be consumed with other main meal components such as vegetables, which feature in 61% of salmon occasions, and potatoes (56%). Other key growth occasions are teatime (+8%), breakfast (+10%) and home snacks (+45%).
Although Friday is the traditional day for eating fish, salmon is less likely to be eaten on this day than other fish. However, it is 20% more likely to be eaten on Saturday.
