Biscuit distributor Andutra is aiming to challenge the growing consumer appetite for rice cakes by launching a corn-based alternative under its Newbury Foods label.
The Waltham Abbey-based outfit said it was bringing out Corn Slims in response to the growing demand for low fat, gluten free, low salt products.
An organic variant will also be available for those seeking such an option.
Andutra brand manager James Hibbins said the offering had been well received by the multiples with listings already secured in Safeway, Asda and Waitrose. They will go into store soon.
Packed in 145g boxes for high on-shelf impact, Corn Slims are also internally wrapped in three separate sellophane packs so that consumers can eat them in more than one sitting while being assured that what they don't eat remains fresh.
They can either be eaten on their own or served with a savoury or sweet topping. Each biscuit contains 24 calories with Andutra aiming to tap into the slimming sector or attract those on special diets. Rsp will be around 99p.
"We are repeatedly asked for gluten free and organic carriers and have had difficulty sourcing the quality and consistency our customers demand. By launching our own brand we can deliver at a very competitive price while adding value for consumers such as the internal separate packaging."
