A small cheese producer is set to move from farmers’markets to the high street after claiming a top award.
The Cornish Cheese Company is celebrating after winning the annual Tesco Cheese Challenge with its Cornish Blue cheese, which will now see it stocked in stores across the UK.
The three man company’s cheese, made in a farmhouse near Liskeard, beat off competition from more than 80 other companies and is now set to hit Tesco shelves in the autumn.
Mike Seymour, Tesco cheese expert, said: “Cornish Blue has been one of the cheese world’s best kept secrets but now we want to turn it into a world beater.”
Cheesemaker Philip Stansfield said: “To get the cheese distributed in Tesco is a major step for me and one that could mean taking on extra staff,
depending on how well it sells.”
At the moment the company is selling most of its cheese through a variety of farmers markets held around Cornwall.
