Costa Coffee is going to invest £20m in drive-thrus and new openings as part of its larger expansion plan that will see it create 1,000 new jobs this year.
The Coca-Cola owned company opened its 300th drive-thru in the UK today (4 August) as it continues to invest in the on-the-go coffee market.
Costa is on course to open 100 stores this year, including 60 new drive-thrus. It said the £20m investment was part of its bigger goal to operate over 500 drive-thrus by 2025 in a bid to expand its presence around the country.
The UK’s biggest coffee store franchise is currently amid an expansion strategy that will see it invest across a range of formats, including on high streets, in retail parks and travel locations, as well as installing Costa Express self-serve machines at its franchise partners.
“We know that drive-thrus continue to prove popular with consumers as the nation gets moving again,” said Costa Coffee UK&I COO Adrian Cook.
“With over 10 years and 300 stores of experience under our belts, we look forward to continuing to delight coffee fans when they’re out and about across the UK.”
By employing around 15 people in each store format, Cook said the company was “proud to be investing in communities across the country and creating more than 1,000 new jobs this year”.
Customers can also use the Click & Collect and Click & Serve features on the Costa Club app to order up to an hour in advance.
As digital becomes crucial to the business’s consumer proposition, Costa said it also expected to be adding predictive ordering, voice-ordering and bespoke ‘fast lanes’ to streamline processes for users on the move.
