The Cotswolds Distillery’s first single malt has made it’s national retail debut in Waitrose.
The “rich and fruity” whisky (46% abv) is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon casks and toasted and re-charred red wine barriques. It joins the brand’s Cotswolds Dry Gin on the retailer’s shelves (rsp: £45/70cl).
The brand was “delighted that Waitrose has chosen to list Cotswolds Single Malt so widely”, said its founder and CEO Dan Szor, calling it “a wonderful statement of belief in both our distillery and in the wider ‘world whisky’ category”.
He added: “We are passionate about showing consumers that small distilleries like ours, outside the traditional whisky heartlands, are committed to a production ethos that champions the highest quality local ingredients and distilling methods that are driven by quality over cost.”
The news comes as a number of English distilleries, many of which have until now sold only white spirits such as gin, are beginning to launch whiskies onto the market as their stocks come of age.
The Lakes Distillery, for instance, launched Steel Bonnets, billed as the world’s first blend of English and Scotch malts, earlier this year, with plans to release its first core single malt, called Oriens, in the first half of 2019.
