Confectionery suppliers Creme d’Or and Calico Cottage have recalled products after they were found to pose a health risk to some shoppers due to undeclared allergens.
Three 200g, Happy Jackson-branded chocolate assortments from Creme d’Or have been pulled from shelves because they did not make it clear that some of the chocolates contained natural pistachio flavouring that could be harmful to consumers with nut allergies.
The trio comprises ‘Congratulations! You Totally Did It!’ (best before 5 December 2018), ‘Happy Birthday Oh Gorgeous One!’ (17 October 2018 and 5 December 2018) and ‘Great Big Box of Awesomeness’ (17 October 2018) – all in a 200g pack.
Opinion: Allergy death shows labelling legislation is falling short
Creme d’Or has issued point-of-sale notices to its retail customers, explaining why the affected products are being recalled. Shoppers are advised to return the chocolates to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Calico Cottage owner NJ Marketing has taken the same action over its Lemon Bonbons (180g, best before September 2019) as a result of undeclared soya and milk, making the sweets a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya or an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.
Both suppliers have been advised by the Food Standards Agency to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recalls.
They come after MPs last week backed calls for Defra to review food labelling laws following the death of a teenager who collapsed on a plane after eating a Pret a Manger baguette.
