UK milk deliveries to dairies showed a 3.4% increase during the first half of this year according to the latest analysis from DEFRA.
Exports of milk for processing to dairies outside the UK recovered by 30% after last year's FMD difficulties.
There were also some big changes in the pattern of milk utilisation.
The liquid milk market increased 0.2%, and cheese manufacturing expanded by a significant 4% to the highest ever levels recorded in the UK. Butter output showed growth of only 1.5%.
All other major uses of milk contracted. Condensed milk output fell by 15%, whole milk powder by 19% and skimmed milk powder by 6%. Cream also fell 9%.

Milk's The White Stuff' campaign is to be given a Euro cash injection.
The European Commission has awarded £490,000 to The Dairy Council in the UK for the promotion of dairy products.
The grant has been match-funded by the Milk Development Council to create a total of £980,000.
The Commission is allocating funds for the promotion of agricultural foods produced within the EU.
The UK promotional campaign will communicate the nutritional benefits of dairy products.

Latest data from the British Egg Industry Council shows egg sales increased by 11% among those who saw the new Lion eggs advertising campaign on TV.
A survey by Taylor Nelson Sofres of almost 9,000 consumers showed that heavy viewers in regions where the campaign was run increased their purchases. In contrast, there was a 3% decline in sales among those who had not seen the ads.
n Salmon surge
A last minute surge in the Canadian Red Salmon catch will avoid hefty price increases this season according to UK importers.
Hardly any UK traders have undertaken new season buying trips which, normally by this time of the year, have taken place.
None of the supermarket executives have been seen, which suggests they are in no rush to buy.
n flat cocktail
Poor availability is expected to have an effect on fruit cocktail this year.
Peach shortages are likely to have an impact and although prices have not yet been announced, they are expected to rise by 20% to cover an expected extra cost on pears.
Pineapple, another key ingredient, has suffered from restricted availability and high prices for the last 12 months, with little hope of improvement until well into next year.
