Dairy Crest is moving production of its recently launched UHT Frijj milkshake to the UK from Spain.

Over the past few weeks, Chocolate fudge brownie and strawberry flavours of long-life Frijj have hit convenience store shelves in London, Manchester and their surrounding areas.

A spokeswoman said that although Spanish production had been the “best option to allow us to test the market”, the company now intended to transfer production to its site at Severnside in Gloucestershire, where it had already started investing in extra capacity.

Dairy Crest has high hopes for the extension of fresh Frijj - currently made at Severnside - into a long-life format. When Dairy Crest announced its interims - for the six months to 30 September 2012 - earlier this month, CEO Mark Allen said long-life Frijj was “one of the planks in the recovery of our dairies business”.

Sales within the company’s Dairies division fell 10.7% in the six months to 30 September.

Fresh Frijj was recently downsized from 500ml to 471ml as Dairy Crest sought to mitigate an increase in ingredients prices.
