More than 1,000 dairy farms have closed across England and Wales since 2013 - almost a tenth of all milk producers across the two nations, according to AHDB Dairy.
Prolonged low farmgate prices and a global supply glut have contributed to a fall of 2.4% (or 239 farms) compared with July 2015 figures. The current total of 9,538 farms is 1,002 down on the same period in 2013.
The trend had been replicated across the EU, AHDB added.
