Dairy UK has formed a new board to look after the interests of members north of the border.
Dairy UK Scotland was set up to identify priorities and promote policy developments. It comprises representatives of producer co-ops, processors and farming interests. Its chairman, Peter Nicholson, milk procurement director of Robert Wiseman Dairies, said: “It is vitally important we reflect the sensitivities of devolved issues.”
John Duncan, chief executive of farmer-owned co-op First Milk, said: “The dairy industry has become increasingly complex and the need for appropriate representation and unification across the industry is far more pronounced.”Cheese an important component of light mealsThe key consumers for cheese are males aged 25-64, who are 5% more likely to eat cheese than other foods. In this group are males aged 25-45, who are key lunchbox consumers. Cheese has a strong presence in the lunchbox due to foods such as sandwiches, and 57% is consumed with bread.
Children aged 6-10 and females aged 25-34 also over-index on cheese consumption. Males aged 25-34 are down 11% on last year. The only consumers showing significant growth are children aged 11-16 (+4%). Is this a result of the variety of snacks and dips on the market for the lunchbox?
The only meal occasion in growth is teatime. Cheese is an important component of a light meal: 45% of cheese consumption is at a light meal occasion in the home.
In terms of the need states, cheese strongly under-indexes on health. The key drivers behind its consumption are favourite (37%), naturally complements food (10%) and easy to clear up (9%).
