Premium soda brand Dalston’s has created its first light variants from sparkling spring water, with no added sugar.
Real Squeezed Elderflower and Real Squeezed Rhubarb will be available from next week from Whole Foods Market and independent grocers. Sweetened by fruit juice, they provide seven calories per 100ml.
The light sodas contain no artificial sweeteners – which Dalston’s has long refused to add to its drinks. In March 2018, the brand’s MD, Dan Broughton, told The Grocer the use of sweeteners “simply pushes the sugar problem sideways, as many of these have negative connotations associated with them”.
The brace of low-cal drinks will be joined on shelf by two new full-sugar variants from Dalston’s: Fizzy Rhubarb and Fizzy Blackcurrant. All four sodas are made with British fruit, and come in a 330ml can with an rsp of £1.09.
They were aimed at the many younger shoppers who were “dramatically reducing their alcohol intake and looking for healthier, booze-free alternatives” said Dalston’s, which is stocked in more than 2,500 shops across the UK.
