Danone has expanded its dairy portfolio with the launch of a branded Skyr range for the UK market.
Available in yoghurt and drink variants, Danone Skyr is an Icelandic-style yoghurt that boasts a “thick and and creamy texture”, which is high in protein, 0% fat and a source of calcium.
It is made with just two ingredients – milk and live cultures, and is 100% non-HFSS, “aligning with Danone’s wider health commitments”, the supplier said.
The yoghurt range comes in three pot sizes: 150g (rsp: £1.10), 480g (rsp: £2.25) and 800g (rsp: £3.30).
The Natural yoghurt variant contains 14g of protein per serving and no added sugars. The Strawberry (rsp: £1.10/150g) variant offers 12g of protein and contains no artificial colours or flavours.
Danone’s Skyr drinks, meanwhile, is available in vanilla and strawberry options, each containing 16g of protein (rsp: £1.50/270ml). They are designed to be consumed on-the-go, and can last for up to four hours out of the fridge, it said.
Unlike most of the French dairy giant’s UK dairy lineup, the NPD also carries larger-than-usual Danone branding on pack, echoing some of its products sold on the Continent.
“We are launching this new range at an exciting moment for the UK market, with growing momentum for Natural yoghurts, which have seen 51% value increase over the last two years,” said Zack Cunningham, head of category and commercial planning dairy, Danone UK & Ireland.
“Following the evident success of Skyr in the French market, we are confident we have developed a product the UK will love, that combines nutrition with great taste.”
The brand said Skyr drove 29% volume growth to the yoghurts category in 2019 in France.
“After seeing the growth of Skyr in other markets, we are thrilled to introduce Danone Skyr to the UK,” said Tom Hickton, dairy marketing director, Danone UK & Ireland. “Our Skyr range offers a tasty option for consumers looking for naturally high-protein, fat-free products.
“Danone Skyr stands out in the market with its thick and creamy texture and mild taste,” Hickton added. “We believe it will be a popular choice among health-conscious shoppers.”
The range will be rolling out in Tesco from 26 February, Ocado from 3 March and Sainsbury’s from 30 April.
