A Tesco store manager, who started his career at one of the 43 stores closed by Dave Lewis, has quizzed the retail boss over his plans for the future following yesterday’s announcement of record losses.

Mark Kanaris, a Metro manager in Sheffield, told Lewis, who appeared in a YouTube interview alongside CFO Alan Stewart, that he had seen more change in the past six months than at any other time in his Tesco career which began as a store trainee in 2006.

Kanaris pressed for reassurance from Lewis on plan including the scrapping of Tesco’s final salary pension scheme, which he described as “very emotive”.

A consultation over the changes began this week.

The store manager also complimented Lewis for his moves to improve pricing and availability.

“When I talk to my colleagues they are delighted in what we’re doing with price and they can see improvements in service,” he told Lewis. “What they want to know is what is next.”

Lewis said in the interview that he had been “blown away” by the attitude of staff, despite 5,000 roles going in the store closures and management shakeup.
