The dairy industry is mourning the death of Tony Vernon, who passed away this week following a nine-month battle with cancer.

Tony, 66, struck out on his own after leaving Embertons, which was then part of the Milk Marketing Board’s creameries division. Starting off from his front room in 1967, Tony grew his company, Murray Vernon, until today it has a turnover of more than £100m and interests in dairy, meat, fish and other products.

Bob Corfield, director, said: “Tony was always going to be going places. When we joined the EU in the 70s, he saw the opportunity for export when the UK was mainly importing.”

A former PTF chairman, Tony leaves a wife, Jane, and two sons Paul and Jeremy. A memorial service will be held at St Mary’s in Nantwich at 11.30 on May 21.
