Defra has called on banana importers to ensure they comply with imminent changes to the way the fruit can be imported.
The rules for importing green bananas into the EU change on 11 May. From 1 August, notification must be given via a Defra system called Peach of green bananas brought from outside the EU into England and Wales.
“All traders who wish to import bananas must be registered on this system,” Defra said.
It added Peach would be phased in from 11 May until 1 August, with the horticultural marketing inspectorate of the Rural Payments Agency providing advice and guidance to importers during that period.
Defra has also set up a Peach helpdesk, which can be contacted on 0845 607 3224.
