Asda boss Tony DeNunzio has been awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours list.

DeNunzio commented: “I believe this honour reflects Asda’s contribution to retail excellence as well as my work with Government on competitiveness – I feel proud and privileged to receive it.”

Other senior figures from the food industry who received a CBE were Soil Association director Patrick Holden, for services to organic farming, and Sylvia Jay, director general of the Food and Drink Federation, for services to the food and drink industries.

There was also a trio of OBEs for food industry representatives, with Michael Clark, managing director of International Fish Canners (Scotland) receiving one for services to the food industry, Majorie Walker, joint managing director of Walkers Shortbread was awarded hers for services to business and exports, and Celia Bennett, the former director of the British Meat Processors’ Association, received hers for services to the meat and livestock industry.

Bill Jordan, chairman of W Jordan (Cereals), for services to the food and drink industries, Angus Wilson, managing director of Wilson’s Country Ltd in Armagh, Northern Ireland, for services to the food processing industry and to charity, and Gilbert Johnson, chair of Skerries Salmon, for services to Salmon Farming in Shetland Islands, were all awarded MBEs.
