The first of Safeway's brand new hypermarket formats is due to open in Plymstock, Devon, by mid-December. It will be followed by four more hypermarkets by next March said CEO Carlos Criado-Perez. He said the hypermarkets would be created by extending stores. Plymstock will be 55,000 sq ft.
Criado-Perez said: " We'll be concentrating on health and beauty, photography and some DIY."
Other new features will include a new range of fresh to go foods, including kebabs, crepes, waffles and ice cream.
Criado-Perez added Safeway was still developing a discount concept, but one offering fresh food.
