from Richard Ali, director of Food Policy, BRC

Sir; I was one of those providing information on obesity to the Health Select Committee (The Saturday Essay, The Grocer, December 13). Rather than an atmosphere of finger pointing, what I found was a committee looking for real solutions for real people.

It is because British food retailers have invested in new product development, introduced nutrition labelling and pioneered communication strategies that healthy eating is more accessible and attractive.

However, the focus on food has obscured the need for us to become more active. Retailers
alone cannot achieve the necessary cultural shift. That is why the government needs to educate consumers to include exercise and stress management in their lifestyle as well as eating a balanced and varied diet.
