750ml bottles of Original, Citrus and Pink have transitioned into the new packaging (rsp: £1.25)

Domestos has rolled out new 50% recycled plastic bottles across its core bleach range.

Its 750ml Original, Citrus and Pink variants (rsp: £1.25) have transitioned to the new bottles in a move it claimed would save 1,505 tonnes of virgin plastic per year.

The new bottles used high-quality recycled resin to ensure strength and durability, said Domestos.

This also enabled the incorporation of recycled plastic into the coloured bottles “without compromising on the distinct colour and quality of the packaging”, it added.

New front-of-pack labelling has also rolled out to communicate the move to consumers.

The move forms part of a wider global packaging commitment by Domestos owner Unilever, which includes halving the company’s use of virgin plastic by 2025.

According to Unilever UK&I home & hygiene category lead Claire Racklyeft, “incorporating recycled plastic into a bottle made for bleach has been challenging, but our packaging team have worked very closely with our suppliers and partners to ensure consistency of material and bottle quality”.

“We know it’s important to shoppers that big brands take action to tackle plastic waste, so we’re already working towards bottles made with 100% recycled plastic.

“By adding recycled plastic back into our bottles we’re helping to keep plastic in packaging – where it is valuable – and out of the environment,” said Racklyeft.
