Two new ‘high-performance’ strawberry varieties have been successfully trialled and are expected to hit the UK market in 2017.
’The new varieties were developed by as part of a breeding programme owned by specialist soft fruit supplier CPM, conducted at Kent-based East Malling Research. One produces a larger, glossy and sweet fruit, while the other is slightly smaller with dense flesh and a balanced sugar/acid profile.
CPM’s Tom Rogers said the trial results for both had been “extremely positive” and commercial volumes should be widely available in 2017.
“Both selections have continued to perform well and be more productive than the standard varieties,” he added.
