French beef producers have been fined 17m euros by the European Commission for fixing meat prices in the wake of Europe's mad cow disease crisis in 2001.
Europe’s competition commissioner Mario Monti said the fine reflected the serious nature of the break in competition rules. In one case a farm union had used violence to force slaughterhouses to sign a price accord.
Monti noted that agreements on prices and restrictions of imports are among “the most serious infringements of competition law”. And that it was the first time the EU had acted against a farm union.
