Applegreen Forecourt

It comes as CEO Zuber Issa recently revealed plans to build his own forecourt empire

EG On The Move has agreed to buy 98 petrol filling stations from Applegreen as it looks to boost its forecourt presence across the UK.

The sale is expected to complete at the end of the month, which will see EG On The Move’s estate grow to almost 150 sites.

It comes as CEO Zuber Issa recently revealed plans to build his own forecourt empire, following the purchase of EG Group’s remaining 32 petrol stations that it retained from the £2bn sell-off to Asda in 2023.

EG On The Move also recently signed a new franchise agreement with the Co-op to supply seven newly built stores. It also works with Spar.

As part of the latest transaction, all 1,142 staff employed by Applegreen’s UK petrol filling business are expected to transfer to the new owners, apart from a “very small” number who work in functions “where there is overlap”.

These employees are either being redeployed or have been offered a redundancy programme. Applegreen has been in consultation will all the employees in question in recent weeks, it said.

The sale does not affect Applegreen’s Welcome Break business in the UK, which employs more than 6,000 people at 59 locations, as it looks to channel its focus towards larger sites.

“We remain totally committed to our presence and further expansion in the UK market and have significant plans to expand both Welcome Break and our EV charging business there, as part of the €1bn investment plan that we announced late last year,” said Applegreen co-founder and CEO Joe Barrett.

“We are growing the Welcome Break business in the UK by developing new-build locations and revamping many of our existing sites. We have a strong pipeline of additional UK sites for development on locations adjacent to motorways and alongside a number of major A-roads. This week, for example, we will open a new £55m (€66m) state-of-the-art Welcome Break MSA on the M1 near Rotherham.”
