Retail egg sales volumes jumped by 6% for the first three quarters of 2015, and could eclipse records dating back to the 1950s this year if sales continue at current rates.
The British Egg Industry Council said the sales boost followed a period of long-term growth in the fresh egg category, with volume sales up a total of 22% since 2008 [Kantar Worldpanel].
BEIC chairman Andrew Joret said young people aged under 34 were purchasing 31% more eggs than they did in 2008, while separate research suggested concerns over cholesterol and eggs were fast disappearing – with 42% now believing it was OK to eat six or more eggs a week, up from just 19% in 2008.
“The really exciting thing is that there is still room for growth as more and more consumers fall in love with eggs and become aware of their benefits,” said Joret.
