Speciality drinks supplier English Garden Tea has been given a new lease of life after being rescued from administration this week.
The company called in administrators just before Christmas, with Robert Horton of insolvency firm Auria Recovery appointed to Garden Blending & Packing Ltd - its registered name - on 23 December.
Auria confirmed a going concern sale of the business had concluded this week but declined to comment on the new owner or reasons behind the collapse.
However, The Grocer understands the rescue deal was put together by Blue Cap Coffee, which is run by the tea company’s founder, John Williams. Blue Cap supplies the Lavazza range of capsules and coffee machines to businesses in the restaurant and café industry. It also offers teas, hospitality accessories, syrups, hot chocolate, cups and lids and biscuits.
Berkshire-based English Garden Tea, which is believed to have a turnover of about £1m, was formed about 25 years ago to produce tea blends for the luxury restaurant, hotel and catering industry.
More recently it launched its own brand to supply clients with 100% Fairtrade-certified products, claiming to be the only English tea company offering that particular ethical seal of approval. All its teas are organically grown and individually packed in London.
The business also supplies coffees as well as tableware, silverware, scented candles, bed linens, teapots and gift sets.
