Members of The Grocer Club have saved thousands of pounds this year thanks to the free legal advice available for one year from Prestige Business Services of Fairford, Gloucestershire.
PBS director Graham Randall said readers can be assured of quality assistance, because Randall's background is that of a company lawyer, who is also a non-executive director of a regional chain of convenience stores.
PBS has received calls about equal opportunities, sex and race discrimination, employment law, the Working Time Directive, maternity and paternity rights, minimum wage, holiday entitlements and even boundary disputes.
Randall said: "We have had calls on basic subjects such as rent reviews, lease negotiations, health & safety, and environmental issues.
"However, the one which appeared to be giving Grocer Club members most trouble was a company selling advertising space on a millennium guide'. Retailers were asked to tick a series of boxes to obtain a raft of information, seemingly at no cost to them.
"When they returned the form they were then invoiced for hundreds or thousands of pounds and when they refused to pay, were threatened with legal action due to the wording of the very' small print.
"The police were involved in this one and our advice was don't pay' because we felt they had been induced to complete the form by devious misrepresentation."
Randall said the company concerned and a similar one had suddenly disappeared and believed any readers calling PBS before paying up had saved themselves a tidy sum of money.
New members of The Grocer Club can obtain free legal advice on employment and general business matters for one year and can also subscribe to the PBS Blueprint, a raft of essential information.
The PBS telephone number is 01285 711202.
