Peter Durose, the former Tesco fresh produce chief, has been forced to close the specialist food shop he opened in 2007.

The English Grocer has closed its doors after Durose and his wife decided they couldn't keep ploughing money into the floundering business, which sold premium food and drink in the Hertfordshire village of Buntingford, just 18 miles from his former stomping ground of Cheshunt.

The shop promoted itself on its local, seasonal food but has now posted a simple message on its website informing customers it has now closed.

Last year Durose told The Grocer the transition from earning a £250,000 salary at Tesco to running an independent had been difficult but outlined plans to open a chain of regional stores.

"You know starting a business is going to be tough but I was surprised how hard it has been," Durose admitted.
