A trade agreement allowing European Union pigmeat, dairy products and other foods access to China's 800 million plus market has been agreed by EU and Chinese officials in Beijing.
The new deal is part of China's progress to membership of the World Trade Organisation and could offer new openings to EU pork and dairy trade exports.
The agreement will liberalise over 90% of the food and farm trade between Europe and China. EU negotiators say they have talked down the average farm trade tariffs from around 30% to 10%. Beijing will implement the agreement over 2004-2005 and is expected to phase-in the duty cuts and tariff quotas in the intervening period.
New low tariffs have been agreed for frozen pigmeat (12%). Special agreements have been made on access for pasta and milk powder with the tariff falling from 25% to 15% and 10% respectively.
