A range of wines from a Chilean Fairtrade winery is set to be introduced to the UK wine trade.
Equality, by Las Lomas winery, is a new brand created in response to the UK's growing demand for fair trade products. The winery received official confirmation of its Fairtrade status last October, which has paved the way for the launch.
The first of the range consists of a Chardonnay/Viognier and a Sauvignon Blanc as well as a Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé. Two 2005 reds will also be launched, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cabernet Sauvignon/Carignon/Carmenère blend.
The wines will initially only be launched in the UK, where they will be distributed by importer Grape-2-Wine. MD Nicholas Ingham said: "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to sell this brand into the UK market and to be flying the flag for Fairtrade wine."
The launch will take place at next week's London International Wine & Spirit Fair. which runs from May 16 to 18.
Only a small number of Fairtrade wines are sold in the UK, with Fairtrade wineries mainly based in either Chile or South Africa. Las Lomas export director Mariana Herlin said: "This is a significant step forward for our company."
