The Co-operative Group is claiming to be the first to offer Fairtrade organic grapes to UK consumers.
The fruit went on sale this week and to encourage consumers the retailer slashed the price in half, from £2.99 to £1.49.
The fruit is from the Orange River region of the Northern
Cape of South Africa and will be on offer in Co-op stores until January 25.
David Croft, head of brand and technical, said: “We are delighted to be the first to market Fairtrade organic grapes. This new product takes Fairtrade to another level and will appeal to a wider customer base.
“We hope the introductory price promotion will encourage customers to try the grapes and seek out other Fairtrade products in the future.
“We hope other supermarkets and manufacturers will follow our lead, providing more support for Fairtrade.”
