A fresh new supply of organic Fairtrade bananas is set to arrive in the UK.
Fairtrade fruit company AgroFair UK said the first customers had already been lined up, including award-winning organic retailer Fresh and Wild.
The fruit, branded Eko-Oké, is being imported from the Valle de Chira banana growers' co-operative in northern Peru.
n A leading banana supplier has voiced disappointment with price levels in the British market.
Bernard Cornibert, MD of Windwards Bananas, the islands' marketing arm, said the UK was losing its reputation as one of the best markets in Europe.
He estimates that retail prices have dropped from an average of 75p/lb to less than 40p in the last decade because of retail competition.
Recent price levels have been among the lowest in Europe, he said.
