Castle Eden from Hartlepool and Harviestoun from Clackmanshire in Scotland took a radically different approach to winter beers to beat off 43 other breweries and win Tesco's Autumn Beer Challenge.
The Castle Eden team won the large brewer category with an as yet unnamed 5.5% abv beer to which it added orange syrup and spruce bark.
Harviestoun won the small brewer section of the competition last spring. This time it came up with "a radically different Celtic style". The addition of roasted barley and a dark colour and consistency have given the beer the working name of Old Engine Oil a title likely to stick.
The beers go on shelf in Tesco from October for 36 weeks.
