Dobbies Garden Centre CEO James Barnes has accused Scottish entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter of trying to scupper Tesco's takeover of the chain.
Dobbies agreed a 1,500p a share offer from Tesco in June but the supermarket is battling to gain support for its bid from shareholders. Sir Tom, who also owns Wyevale Garden Centres, has since increased his share in Dobbies to 29% but has said he will not make an offer.
“Tom Hunter owns two competing businesses. It looks like his primary aim is to see the deal fall through,” Barnes told the Daily Mail. “They are clearly hoping it will be difficult for Tesco to get past 50%.”
