Filippo Berio has launched a duo of vegan pestos.
The pair – Basil and Sun Dried Tomato – were created by removing cheese and replacing it with tofu, with further work being undertaken to “match as closely as possible” the flavour profile of the core pestos. They are certified by the vegan society (rsp: £2.75/190g).
Filippo Berio UK MD Walter Zanre said the duo “really tick all the boxes when it comes to flavour, so they’re the perfect store cupboard essential for anyone who’s vegan or looking to reduce their dairy intake”.
“We spent a lot of time in the kitchen developing the recipe to get the taste just right – so anyone who already loves our Filippo Berio pesto can be confident it is equally delicious.”
Filippo Berio cited YouGov data which showed 6% of the British population were vegan, while 13% could be classed as flexitarians.
The news makes Filippo Berio the latest in a series of suppliers to roll out plant-based NPD this month.
Cheese alternative brand Sheese, for instance, rolled out what it claimed were the UK’s first vegan arancini balls this week.
Plant-based pioneer This, meanwhile, made its debut in food to go earlier in July, rolling out a range of prepacked sandwiches and snack pots exclusively into WH Smith.
